My Creative Space...

in the making
This week, just as my creative mojo got back into gear I've been forced to put on the brakes.
My right hand was struck with tendonitis a couple of weeks after A was born (apparently this form is sometimes called "Mother's Thumb"), and so far treatment has achieved not much. If anything, it's gotten steadily worse.
The day after I pieced together the top for A's cot/play quilt (above), in a very satisfying (if perhaps too late) night of cutting and sewing, I was told that I really should try to stop using my right thumb. Not super easy, especially if you're a right hander, but I am trying to rest it as much as possible.
So whilst the sewing machine and knitting basket sit there, inviting me to play, I am reserving my thumb usage for more essential activities (like pulling up my pants) and retraining myself to be a two finger typist.
Other (more) creative spaces here.

  1. You poor thing. I had that with baby number 2. Absolute shocker! It does get better.
Wish I had a magical cure for you but sadly I don't. I did physio, braces etc but I think it was just time. Goodluck!
Chocolate was good - did nothing for the hand or the waist but kept me happy!

  2. Nothing wrong with abit of two finger typing - I am quite fond of it! But I do have my other digits in full working order so really shouldnt let them slack of.

Nice use of the knit fabric, maybe it can be an educational section in your quilt?

  3. Do you wear a splint? I was a 'Mother's Thumb' sufferer when I had the first kid and the splint was a godsend.

Hope you're back to it quickly lovely - there's too much creative goodness to bottle up for too long...

  4. Oww, that sound both annoying and painful. The quilt looks like it is going to be a stunner once you are able to work on it.

  5. Ouch Di!
I got that with my first - and it took a while to get over it. I did see a hand therapist who fitted me with a plastic cast to wear for a few weeks - a pain but a good reminder not to move it. She did some mysterious light therapy too. All very strange.....
Love that pieceing - you do have such a way with colour. xx

  6. Well, that sucks. Not the quilt obviously, just the manky thumb thing. I would find that very difficult indeed to bear. Can you drive?? Perhaps tiem to come see Santos whilst I play baby sitter!

  7. Man Di that really sucks. I guess it makes you realise how useful our thumbs really are! I just love the names for these things - 'mother's thumb' and apparently I had 'baby back' after Ms S was born! But then again, who doesn't have baby back?! Here's to a speedy recovery!

  8. a light bulb moment! i haven't been able to knit since sam was born - a couple of rows and my thumb and palm start to really hurt. i thought it was because i was out of practice :) but it happened again when i was writing out a cheque yesterday. then i read this post. hmmm, perhaps i should see about it. so sorry to hear that you are in pain, i hope you get some relief soon! the quilt is really beautiful, i love the colours!

  9. Thanks all, haven't had much luck with splints, strapping or supports, but am trying a different one this week which seems to be helping... although I really shouldn't have tried to open the jar that I just opened... OUCH!!! Seems like rest and time are the only things to help.
